The crown of the tooth is the part that you can see above the gum line, while the roots lie below.
WHAT IS A CROWN?
When a natural crown is fractured or decayed and can’t be repaired by a filling, Dr. Khambay carefully crafts and places an artificial crown to restore the function of the damaged tooth. The procedure takes about 1-2 hours, similar to having a filling done.
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?
Getting a crown is much like having a filling performed, both in length of time and comfort level. After decay has been removed and the tooth is reduced in size, leaving only healthy tissue, an impression is taken for creating the final crown. A second appointment is scheduled for placement of the final crown. In the meantime, a temporary tooth is placed to protect the reduced tooth and allow for normal function.
CAN I EAT AFTER HAVING A CROWN?
It’s best to wait about 30 minutes after completion of your treatment before eating or drinking. We recommend you wait 24 hours before eating anything hard or sticky that might pull at the crown as the cement is setting.
HOW LONG DO CROWNS LAST?
Dental crowns can last up to 20 years, depending on care, location in the mouth, and the materials used for the procedure. We’ve seen them last even longer!
HOW DO I CARE FOR A CROWN?
Caring for a crown is like caring for a natural tooth. Simply brush twice and floss daily, and make sure to keep up on your regularly scheduled cleanings with us.
